The Silvered Room

Play
[SCENE START] SETTING: A cellar room in the Lower District. A single tallow candle flickers on a rough oak table. The air is thick with the smell of damp earth and old wool. Heavy curtains block the high, narrow windows. KESTREL stands three paces back from the table. Between him and ELARA lies a small object wrapped in heavy, midnight-blue velvet. ELARA stands on the opposite side, her hands clasped tight at her waist. ELARA: (Whispering) Is it truly there? KESTREL: It is. Wrapped twice. The velvet keeps the hunger of the glass dampened, but it is not a permanent seal. ELARA: I do not understand why it would be hungry. KESTREL: It does not eat meat, girl. It eats the presence. The essence of the thing that looks into it. Once the glass knows your face, a piece of you remains behind in the silver. You will feel a cold spot in your chest where that piece used to be. (Elara takes a half step forward. Kestrel raises a hand, stopping her.) KESTREL: Not yet. You must decide if the knowledge is worth the vacancy. Most people live their whole lives content with the descriptions of others. "You have your mother's nose," they say. "Your eyes are the color of a storm." Is that not enough? ELARA: It is a ghost's life. I am a collection of rumors. I want to know who is speaking when I open my mouth. (Kestrel sighs. He reaches out, slowly peeling back the first layer of velvet. He does not look at the glass; he keeps his eyes fixed on the floor.) KESTREL: I will uncover it. When I do, you must not lean in too fast. The shock can cause a spiritual vertigo. (He reveals the mirror. It is a small, oval hand-glass with a tarnished silver frame. It sits flat on the table, reflecting only the ceiling beams.) ELARA: (Breathless) It looks like a pool of still water. KESTREL: It is a thief. Step forward. Carefully. (Elara moves. Her steps are hesitant. She stops a foot away, then leans over. As her face enters the frame, she recoils violently, nearly knocking over the candle.) ELARA: (Gasping) Who is that? KESTREL: (Still looking away) That is you. ELARA: No. No, that person is... she is staring at me. She is mimicking my every breath. Her eyes are too wide. KESTREL: That is the terror of the first sight. You are seeing a stranger who happens to be yourself. (Elara leans back in, slower this time. Her expression shifts from horror to a profound, aching curiosity. She reaches out a finger, stopping just millimeters from the surface.) ELARA: I have a mole just here, by the temple. I never knew. And the way my lip curls when I am afraid. It is... it is a very specific kind of face. KESTREL: Be careful. The longer you linger, the deeper the hook sinks. ELARA: (A small, fragile smile) It is not a trap. It is a map. I can finally see where I begin and the rest of the world ends. KESTREL: (Looking up for the first time, his voice soft) That is the most dangerous part of the silver. It makes you believe you are a separate thing. (Elara does not look away. She remains frozen, locked in a gaze with her own existence.) [BLACKOUT]
