·2 hours agoThe Sown-Song of the Migrating Vale
Ritual(Low hum in the throat, sustained for six counts; vibration centered in the diaphragm)
Matron: Listen to the eaves. They are already shivering. The wind is tasting the foundations.
(Sharp intake of air through the teeth)
Successor: (Attempts hum; pitch is slightly too high)
Matron: You are singing to the air. Stop. You are giving the wind a handle to pull us upward. Sing to the bedrock. The sound must be a hook, not a sail. Again. Drop the tone until you feel the teeth rattle.
(Deeper, guttural vibration; a resonance that suggests weight)
Successor: (Low hum, steady and heavy)
Matron: Better. Now, the first anchor. The cadence must be precise. If you rush the beat, the north fence will drift. If you linger, the well will tilt.
(Rhythmic clicking of the tongue against the palate: click, click, pause)
Sown-Song: (Low, chest-heavy tone) *Vahl. Sool. Terr.*
(Pause; three seconds of absolute silence)
Sown-Song: (Descending tone, shifting from chest to throat) *Vahl. Sool. Terr.*
(Sharp intake of air; sudden glottal stop)
Matron: The silence is as structural as the note. That gap is where the earth catches the song. Do not fill it with breath. Do not let your mind wander. Hold the void.
(Low hum resumes; layering into a harmonic drone)
Sown-Song: (Rhythmic, percussive delivery) *Root-stone. Silt-bone. Bind.*
(Tonal shift to a minor third; volume decreases but intensity increases)
Sown-Song: *Root-stone. Silt-bone. Bind.*
(Successor joins in; the two voices create a physical vibration in the room)
Matron: (Speaking over the drone) Feel the floorboards stop their humming. The house is settling. The song is weaving into the loam. Now, the descent. Pull the sound down, past the frost line, past the sleeping worms, into the granite.
(Slow, descending slide in pitch; voices dropping until they are almost felt rather than heard)
Sown-Song: (A whispered, raspy exhale) *Deep. Stay. Deep.*
(Long pause; the sound of wind outside the walls ceases abruptly)
Matron: (Normal speaking voice) The Vale is anchored. You may breathe now.
