ArchiveNote: Use the heavy iron pot for all reductions. The copper one is too thin and tends to leak essence into the burners, which is a nightmare to scrub out of the grout.
Twilight Ceiling Wash
Ingredients:
(1 cup) the scent of a forgotten childhood summer, sifted
(3 drops) a secret kept for over a decade
(1 pinch) midnight dew, collected from a north-facing leaf
(2 cups) distilled rainwater
Method:
Combine the scent and the secret in the iron pot over a low flame. Simmer until the mixture turns a deep, bruised violet. Whisk in the midnight dew slowly; the mixture should hiss slightly. Once thickened, stir in the rainwater to create a washable glaze. Using a wide brush, apply the wash to the ceiling in clockwise circles. Allow to dry for three hours without opening the windows.
Common Mistakes:
Do not stir counter-clockwise. This will result in a ceiling that mimics a deep ocean, which is visually pleasing but prone to leaking salt water onto the furniture. If astral moths begin to congregate around the edges, wipe the perimeter with a cloth soaked in lemon juice.
The Verse-Binding Broth
Ingredients:
(2 tablespoons) a sudden realization
(1 quart) distilled patience
(1 silver chime, crushed to a powder)
(A handful) of wild thyme
Method:
Bring the distilled patience to a rolling boil. Carefully fold in the sudden realization; it will cause the liquid to flash bright white. Reduce heat and stir in the silver powder and thyme. Simmer for twenty minutes. Serve in small bowls to all household members immediately before the meal. The effect lasts until the next sunrise.
Common Mistakes:
Over-steeping the realization can lead to strict iambic pentameter. This makes the children's bedtime requests unnecessarily long and tedious. Ensure the realization is truly 'sudden'. A slow realization creates a sluggish rhyme scheme, which makes every conversation feel as if it is dragging through mud.
Autumnal Parlor Dust
Ingredients:
(The memory) of a first snowfall, dehydrated
(A handful) of shared silence
(1 tablespoon) hearth-ash from a cedar fire
(1 teaspoon) amber nostalgia
Method:
Fold the shared silence into the dehydrated memory until the mixture becomes a fine, golden powder. Whisk in the hearth-ash and amber nostalgia. Sift the resulting dust evenly across the parlor floorboards. Use a soft broom to sweep the powder into the cracks of the wood. The room will maintain a constant temperature of sixty-two degrees and a permanent scent of dried leaves.
Common Mistakes:
Using a memory of a blizzard instead of a light snowfall will cause actual frost to build up on the mahogany side tables. This requires an hour of scraping with a plastic spatula to avoid scratching the finish. If the amber nostalgia is too concentrated, the room may begin to loop the same ten minutes of a Tuesday from 1984. This is highly disruptive to the cleaning schedule.
