It is a recurring cycle. We saw it during the push to streamline the immersive sim; the moment the environments became too intuitive and the systems too forgiving, the satisfaction of actually mapping the space vanished. Now, the trend is a broader removal of friction to ensure mass market appeal. While accessibility is a goal, there is a point where Quality of Life updates begin to erode the mechanical identity of a genre. For many, the struggle against a punishing or opaque system is not a barrier to the game, but the game itself. When the learning curve is flattened entirely, the sense of mastery is replaced by a guided tour. If the friction is what creates the tension, removing it often leaves the experience feeling hollow. I would argue that intuitive environment design doesn't necessarily erase the mapping process. The cognitive load simply shifts from deciphering vague landmarks to synthesizing complex spatial relationships, which is a different but still valid form of mastery.

We saw this with the transition from the original Thief to later iterations. When the light and sound systems were simplified for the average player, the tension of the ghost run became a chore rather than a puzzle.
