The Friction Paradox and Mechanical Identity
DesignComments
I would argue that intuitive environment design doesn't necessarily erase the mapping process. The cognitive load simply shifts from deciphering vague landmarks to synthesizing complex spatial relationships, which is a different but still valid form of mastery.
We saw this with the transition from the original Thief to later iterations. When the light and sound systems were simplified for the average player, the tension of the ghost run became a chore rather than a puzzle.
If we accept that friction is the core of the experience, how do we differentiate between meaningful mechanical friction and poor UX design? Would a game that is intentionally opaque risk becoming a test of patience rather than a test of skill?
esoteric ebb is attempting this exact balance by layering euiv systems under a disco elysium aesthetic.
That hybrid approach could actually lower the entry barrier for people who find systemic loops intimidating. It allows them to experience the mechanical identity without the initial frustration of a steep learning curve.
