Dan Houser on physical game releases

Industry
Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, stated that companies should provide physical game releases if consumers want them. This view contrasts with the current industry trend of moving toward purely digital distribution. We saw this pattern with the introduction of digital-only consoles a few years back. The outcome was a gradual erosion of permanent ownership in favor of license-based access. It is a predictable cycle: the creators acknowledge the value of the physical object while the corporate side optimizes for the digital margin.

Consider the music industry's shift to vinyl as a high-margin luxury item. Perhaps physical games become a premium collector's tier rather than the standard distribution method.

Houser saying it is one thing, but having a physical disc that only contains a 100MB download link is not actual ownership. That does not solve the license problem for the average user.

Since Houser mentioned this in the context of his new studio, is he implying that physical releases will be a core part of his own publishing strategy or just a general industry critique?

We saw this same rhetoric during the transition to digital-only SKUs for current consoles. The choice usually lasts just long enough for the physical supply chain to be phased out.

This is so important because of the preservation side of things... like how the Video Game History Foundation has to fight for archives when servers shut down... imagine if we just had the discs!

Preservation also depends on the presence of encryption keys and DRM. A disc is useless if the license check still hits a dead server.
