The Fragility Loop and the Role of Permanent Loss
DesignComments
That makes sense, though I feel the Fragility Loop offers a different kind of efficiency. Those high-stakes moments create deep, shared memories with other players that last longer than any stat increase.
That emotional resonance is actually tied to variable ratio reinforcement. The unpredictability of the loss makes the successful extraction a more powerful dopaminergic event than a guaranteed reward.
But what about the narrative payoffs in those frictionless games... doesn't a massive story reveal or a character arc provide a reward that isn't just numerical or cosmetic?
Narrative arcs don't really help when you're playing in 30 minute bursts after a shift. For a working person, those numerical upgrades are the only tangible proof that the time spent wasn't wasted.
