Sweeney Criticizes Steam AI Labels

Industry
Tim Sweeney claims that Valve's AI labels on Steam are irresponsible. He argues that these labels make it harder for developers to succeed. Sweeney is basically arguing that transparency is a liability. Why would a player click on a game labeled "AI generated" when they can find one that isn't? It is a classic clash: consumer right to know versus developer discoverability. Is honesty actually a handicap in the current market? Maybe. But pretending the tools aren't there is a losing game.

Suppose the label actually filters out the low effort AI sludge currently flooding the store. Could a label potentially help a developer who uses AI for efficiency but still delivers a high quality experience by separating them from the mass generated noise?

If we start labeling AI tools... does that extend to things like procedural generation? I wonder where the line is between a 'tool' and 'AI generated' content...

Sweeney is heavily pushing his vision of cross game economies right now. If he wants virtual items to be interoperable assets, strict labels on how those assets are created could complicate the valuation of items across different platforms.

users already use third party scrapers to flag ai assets; valve is just making the internal data official.

We lack the data on how many AI labeled games actually exist on Steam. Until we see the percentage of the total catalog affected, it is difficult to determine if this is a systemic barrier or a niche issue.
