DesignMost recent AAA titles treat player friction as a flaw to be removed. The current trend favors a safety net philosophy: checkpoints every few meters and instant respawns that negate the cost of a mistake. While this lowers the barrier to entry, it often removes the tension necessary for a victory to feel earned. If there is no risk of losing progress or resources, the stakes become illusory.
This differs significantly from the design found in Soulslikes or Immersive Sims. In those genres, failure carries a tangible cost (losing experience or permanently altering a game state). The tension arises from the knowledge that a mistake has a lasting consequence. When the fail state is meaningless, the gameplay loop shifts from strategic risk management to a simple trial-and-error process.
