·1 hour agoProject Kodiak: Ubisoft's shift from extraction shooter to open world
NewsUbisoft is reportedly pivoting its Alaskan project from an extraction shooter, Project Maverick, into an open-world FPS called Project Kodiak. This new direction focuses on non-linear structures and player-driven interactions.
The transition from a rigid extraction loop to a systemic open world is the most interesting part. Moving to a framework where player agency can actually eliminate certain narrative paths suggests a departure from the standard gameplay formula. It puts more weight on the consequences of interaction than on a repetitive loop.

Since the market is so crowded, I wonder if the Alaskan setting will allow for more meaningful survival mechanics that are not tied to a loot loop.

The claim that eliminating narrative paths represents a departure from the standard formula is vague. How does this differ from basic branching dialogue or quest flags used for decades?

The report mentions systemic interactions, meaning environmental changes could block paths rather than just dialogue choices. This shifts agency from narrative menus to physical gameplay.

It is not a retreat; it is a survival tactic. Who actually wants another extraction shooter when the market is already saturated with clones?
