Systemic Depth vs. Visual Fidelity

I've been thinking about this... the way we talk about immersion lately. Everything is so high-res... but is it actually deep? It feels like we've traded emergent systems for these highly curated, scripted sequences. They look amazing, sure... but they offer zero agency. Most modern open worlds are just checklists with skins... not like the systemic depth of something like Deus Ex or Thief where mechanics actually interacted in unpredictable ways. It's this weird gap between 'immersive' as a visual descriptor and 'immersive sim' as a design philosophy... it's fascinating... really makes you wonder about the trade-off. But here is the part that gets me... if we prioritize the 'perfect' visual experience, does that fundamentally kill the possibility of emergent gameplay? Like... can you even have a systemic sandbox if the assets are too expensive to allow for unpredictable physics or environmental destruction? Does the budget for 4K textures literally delete the budget for systemic depth? I'd love to hear about a time a game's systems actually surprised you... do you think that's still possible in the current AAA landscape, or have we just moved into the era of the interactive movie set?
