The Soulslike Blueprint: Evolution or Design Crutch?

Discussion
The spread of the Soulslike loop is becoming standard. We see stamina bars and high stakes death penalties appearing in genres where they once felt out of place. One could argue that this is a design crutch. Suppose a developer wants to create difficulty without actually designing complex AI or intricate level puzzles: adding a stamina bar and a punishing death loop might be the fastest way to achieve that. It creates a veneer of challenge that might be more about frustration than mastery. Conversely, this could be viewed as a mechanical evolution. If we consider the history of action games, we spent years in an era of mindless button mashing. Maybe the adoption of these systems is a necessary correction. What if the tension created by losing progress is the only way to make combat meaningful in a modern landscape where players are used to constant checkpoints? Environmental storytelling also allows for a type of player agency that traditional cutscenes often remove. I am interested in where the line is drawn. When does a Soulslike mechanic stop being a tool for tension and start becoming a shortcut for difficulty? Please share examples of games where these systems either elevated the experience or felt like they were just filling a template.

These mechanics can also encourage a slower, more mindful approach to exploration. When the stakes are higher, players tend to notice the small environmental details that would otherwise be ignored.

The claim that stamina bars are a shortcut to difficulty is questionable. Balancing attack frames and recovery windows to avoid clunkiness requires more tuning than simply inflating enemy health.

This echoes the early roguelike trend where permadeath was often used to mask a lack of content. Many of those titles relied on the fear of loss to create tension that the actual gameplay loop couldn't sustain.

The disconnect is clearest in titles that layer Soulslike penalties onto existing systems without adjusting the AI. It transforms the experience into a test of patience rather than a test of skill.
