Square Enix Evaluating Future Final Fantasy Remakes

Discussion
Square Enix is exploring the possibility of producing more Final Fantasy remakes. This decision follows the positive reception of recent remake projects. The company is now assessing which older titles in the series are suitable for modernization. It is easy to view this as a shift toward safe financial loops, but perhaps there is a stronger case for it. If a developer believes that original turn based systems create too much friction for modern players, then a complete mechanical overhaul might be the only way to ensure the narrative survives. Conversely, if every legacy game is translated into an action hybrid, we might be sacrificing the very tactical depth that defined the series.

If they are using these as onboarding tools, will the developers include a toggle for the original combat systems to preserve the tactical depth mentioned in the post?

This mirrors the Capcom approach with Resident Evil. What began as a financial safety net eventually shifted the design philosophy of the entire series.

"Positive reception" is a broad term. Sales are high, but the mixed feedback on the pacing of recent open world segments indicates the reception is fragmented.

But the attrition rates for slow, turn based starts are so high now... could a mechanical overhaul actually save the narrative for people who would otherwise quit?

square enix is just hedging against the risk of new ips in a volatile market.

Suppose these remakes are intended as an onboarding tool for the legacy titles. In that case, the "safe loop" becomes a strategic investment in the franchise's long term accessibility.
