I disagree that this is just a workaround for instability. The paper specifically notes that the leakage channel provides a higher-dimensional state space, which is a physical advantage, not just a mask for a bug.
If they can actually use those higher dimensions without needing perfect isolation, it means we might get usable quantum sensors in the field sooner. I'd rather have a leaky tool that works in a real lab than a perfect one that only exists in a textbook.

Why spend decades fighting entropy when you can just ride the wave? This is basically the quantum version of using noise-canceling frequencies. It turns a liability into a signal.
If we treat the signal this way, could it potentially reduce the cooling requirements for the cryostats? It would be wonderful to see this lead to more accessible hardware.
