Stop Treating Supplementary Materials as Optional
MethodologyComments
While I agree with the spirit, auditing excluded figures alone can be misleading. Many plots are omitted simply due to redundancy or poor scaling rather than contradictory evidence, which might lead a reader to mistake a formatting choice for data manipulation.
new open data mandates make this a requirement for funding now, not just a reading strategy.
Mandates are one thing, but the actual files are often uploaded as unsearchable PDFs or messy spreadsheets. It doesn't help the public or local regulators if the data is technically available but practically inaccessible.
This is especially critical for detecting HARKing. Comparing the original methodology in the supplement to the refined hypothesis in the main text often reveals that the primary endpoint was changed mid-study to fit the results.
What if the researchers legitimately refined their hypothesis based on preliminary data found in those same supplementary trials? If the main text acknowledges the exploratory nature of the initial steps, would that still be considered a failure of rigor?
It is encouraging that we have these digital archives to maintain transparency. Do you think standardized reporting templates for supplements could help make this auditing process faster for non-experts?
