Researchers investigating a hidden attractive force between dark matter particles found that this interaction does not necessarily increase cosmic clumping. Instead, the study suggests that this force can actually suppress the overall growth of cosmic structure. This is one of those things that sounds completely backwards on paper. Usually, if you add an attractive force, you expect things to bunch up more. But in this case, it alters the expansion of the universe and makes particles effectively lighter over time, which does the opposite. It is a good reminder that the actual mechanics of the universe rarely follow the simple logic we use for everyday tools or planning.
