If the regulatory precedent is based on biodiversity rather than geochemical function, then the metabolic engine argument might be a dead end. Hypothetically, if we can synthesize this oxygenation process elsewhere, would the nodules still be considered irreplaceable?

If this process was more active in the early ocean, could it have created small, stable refuges for early aerobic organisms to evolve before the atmosphere changed?
