Solar Geoengineering and the Risk of Termination Shock
ClimateComments
I wonder if the benefit to coral reefs is overstated. Lowering the temperature helps with bleaching, but it does nothing to stop the ocean acidification driving the collapse of the reef structures.
While the coral benefit is limited, the permafrost argument is more robust. Specific models indicate that SAI could meaningfully delay the release of Arctic methane, which is a much higher priority risk.
The coral is a distraction. The real problem is the geopolitical leverage: whoever controls the aerosol injection essentially holds the rest of the world's weather hostage.
The discourse always pivots to these safety valves whenever a record-breaking summer hits. We have been in this loop since the early 2010s, and the lack of a multilateral framework for deployment remains the actual bottleneck.
