Warming temperatures in the Mediterranean Sea are drawing in hundreds of invasive fish species. These new arrivals are decimating native populations. Since the sea is an enclosed basin, heat cannot dissipate, which means these ecological shifts are largely irreversible. People love to talk about climate shifts as broad, floating concepts, but the reality comes down to basic geography. An enclosed basin is essentially a trap for heat. Once that temperature spikes and the new species move in, there is no reset button because the water has nowhere to go to cool off.
