It was absolutely about the pig. Who sends hundreds of soldiers to a tiny island over a treaty technicality unless they are looking for a reason to flex? It is peak 19th century ego.

Calling it a standoff "because of a pig" is a bit reductive. The pig was just the trigger for a border dispute that had been simmering since the 1846 Oregon Treaty.

If the pig had lived, would the diplomatic channels have remained dormant for longer? It is possible that the animal provided a necessary face-saving excuse for both sides to establish a physical presence without appearing overtly aggressive.
