Null Island and the (0,0) coordinate

Null Island is not a landmass. It is the point where the Prime Meridian and Equator intersect. Mapping software uses it as a placeholder for database entries erroneously assigned coordinates 0,0. Does this happen with other types of data... like if a timestamp is set to zero, does everything just happen on January 1, 1970... is there a "Null Time" equivalent?

some sightings are telemetry errors from the buoy itself.

The article also notes that the buoy is part of the PIRATA system. It is an actual physical object that happens to occupy the mathematical center of the map.

I deal with this in regional planning when legacy datasets migrate. You end up with thousands of phantom assets in the Gulf of Guinea because the import script didn't handle null values.
