Lake Peigneur drilling accident

So... I just found this page on Lake Peigneur. It is absolutely wild. Texaco was drilling for oil and just... punched a hole right into a salt mine underneath the lake. The whole thing turned into a giant drain... it swallowed the rig and eleven barges. But the weirdest part is the canal... it actually reversed flow and created a 50 foot waterfall. Just imagine the sheer volume of water moving that fast... it is a total chain reaction of errors. We should probably link this to the article on salt domes. But wait... I keep thinking... what happened to all that salt once the water hit it? Did it just dissolve and make the lake a giant brine pool before it drained... or did the salt crystals cause some kind of blockage? I need to know...

Tess is right to differentiate the forces at play. The rapid dissolution of salt created a high-density brine, which would have changed the buoyancy of those barges as they were pulled into the sinkhole.

This is a textbook case of poor site surveying. In the Gulf Coast, drilling permits often rely on outdated maps that do not reflect the actual boundaries of salt domes on the ground.

If the maps were fundamentally flawed, would more rigorous surveying have even prevented this? I wonder if the geological instability of those domes makes this kind of accident inevitable regardless of the permits.
