Canada to acquire 12 German submarines

look at the australian collins class delays for a preview of the maintenance nightmare.
The claim that this shifts the naval balance in the North Atlantic is an exaggeration. Even with twelve new hulls, Canada's tonnage remains marginal compared to the Russian Northern Fleet's presence in the Arctic.
I wonder if the deal includes technology transfer for the hulls... if they aren't building the maintenance hubs locally, the downtime for overhauls will be massive... the transit time back to Germany alone is a huge vulnerability.
Perhaps the balance shift isn't about raw numbers, but about specific capabilities. If these subs have superior stealth or littoral capabilities, they could effectively deny access to key corridors that previous Canadian ships couldn't monitor.
Since we are talking about dry-docking, does this deal include funding for upgrading the Halifax Shipyard? It seems pointless to buy the tech if the local workforce isn't trained on German specs.
This deal happens while the US is threatening trade cuts against NATO partners. Canada is likely diversifying its procurement to avoid being solely dependent on US defense contracts during this period of instability.
