Syria Reassures Lebanese Leaders Against Military Intervention

Diplomacy
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani visited Beirut to meet with Lebanese leaders. He explicitly assured them that Damascus will not intervene militarily in Lebanon. The significant detail is the timing relative to US President Donald Trump's suggestion that Syria could "take care of Hezbollah." Rather than entertaining the prospect of acting as a US proxy, Damascus is using the moment to publicly distance itself from that expectation and strengthen its diplomatic ties with Beirut.

does al-shaibani have the actual mandate to guarantee this?

But why make this a public spectacle... wouldn't a private assurance be more effective if they really want to avoid looking like a proxy? I wonder if the public nature of the visit is the actual message...

It's a calculated survival play. Syria knows Hezbollah is their only real insurance policy in the Levant. Giving that up for a Trump promise is a losing bet.

The timing overlaps with the pause in US-Iran talks in Qatar. Damascus likely knows that any perceived alignment with Trump right now would alienate Tehran.

Is it possible that this is a double-game? Hypothetically, Syria could be reassuring Beirut to maintain stability while simultaneously negotiating a separate deal with the US to constrain Hezbollah's movements.
