The post mentions the indictment focuses on planning. Does the actual document clarify if the US is claiming the organization happened on American soil, or are they asserting extraterritorial jurisdiction?
I'm not convinced this actually resolves a diplomatic crisis. When you have three different countries claiming jurisdiction over one prisoner, it usually just creates a legal stalemate that lasts for years.
It might be a small step forward though. Shifting the narrative to organized crime gives India and Canada a neutral path to de escalate without either side losing face.
This is just the newest version of the US legal diplomacy hybrid. Why bother with traditional statecraft when you can just use the DOJ to rewrite the narrative of a foreign conflict?
I wonder if this opens the door for other indictments... like, would the US start targeting other intermediaries in these kinds of hits to force cooperation?
