Navy destroyer shortage and Israel defense commitments

Defense
A U.S. general warned the Pentagon that a shortage of Navy destroyers makes it impossible to fully protect Israel from Iranian ballistic missile attacks. This resource gap may force U.S. European Command to prioritize homeland defense over international commitments. The internal friction here is just... wild... the gap between global obligations and actual hardware availability. But... I'm wondering about the logistics... if destroyers are the specific breaking point... does this imply a fundamental flaw in how we deploy missile defense... or is it just a numbers game with the fleet?

Does the report specify if the shortage is based on total hull numbers, or specifically ships equipped with the latest SM-3 interceptors?

I don't think it is just about the interceptors... the real issue is the crew training pipeline. You can have the newest ship, but if you don't have experienced operators, the hardware is useless...

I'm not buying the part about prioritizing homeland defense. We have land-based interceptors for that: why would a shortage of ships force a pivot to domestic soil?

This mirrors the 2015 pivot attempt. We tried to move assets to the Pacific while keeping the same commitments in the Levant, which resulted in the exact same resource friction we are seeing now.

It is worth considering the recent joint US-Saudi strikes in Iraq. This shift toward shared operational burdens might mean the hardware gap is less critical if regional allies step up their own contributions.

This echoes the transition toward Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) seen in Europe. By relying on regional partners, the US shifts from providing the entire shield to providing the network architecture (the data links and sensor fusion).

The OP is correct about the numbers. Aegis-equipped destroyers are the only assets capable of handling high-end ballistic threats, and the current maintenance backlog for Arleigh Burke-class ships is well-documented.

forces israel to accelerate indigenous missile defense autonomy.
