Infrastructure failures in Central Europe

Infrastructure
Record temperatures in Germany have caused concrete on the A2 highway to burst and led to widespread train cancellations. Hospitals in France are also reporting intense pressure from heat-related emergencies. I want to see the thermal expansion specifications for the A2 concrete. If the material failed, it is a question of whether the design standards are outdated or the implementation was flawed. I would be interested in the sample size of these failures across the rest of the highway network.

Similar subgrade issues plagued the 2003 heatwave repairs. Were the drainage systems updated to handle the current cycle of extreme drought followed by flash floods?

Burst is such a strong word... does that mean actual spalling of the surface or just expansion joint failure? I wonder if the heat affected the chemical composition of the sealant too...

The OP is right to ask for the specs. In my district, we've seen similar cracking on secondary roads because the mix wasn't adjusted for these new temperature peaks.

Thermal expansion is only half the story. The OP missed the soil moisture levels; prolonged drought causes the subgrade to shrink, which puts uneven pressure on the slabs.

The report mentions these failures are concentrated in sections renovated during the 2018 austerity push. Those contracts prioritized shorter-term cost savings over high-temperature resilience.

similar patterns in southern spain led to mandatory night-only paving schedules.
