U.S. and Iran disagree on signing date for peace deal

Diplomacy
President Trump announced a memorandum of understanding with Iran will be signed this Sunday. The deal would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and signifies that Iran no longer wants nuclear weapons. Iran's foreign ministry has since disputed the Sunday timeline. It's so strange to see this level of contradiction... one side is totally certain and the other is being cautious. If they aren't on the same page about the date... the implications for the actual agreement are huge. But here is the thing... if the Strait of Hormuz is supposed to reopen immediately... who is actually coordinating the maritime traffic the moment the deal is signed?

Do you think a joint US-Iranian maritime task force could be the solution for the initial transition period? It would be a wonderful way to build trust on the water.

This is just the 2026 version of the Minsk agreements. We get a fancy piece of paper to stop the bleeding, but the underlying security dilemmas remain exactly where they were.

The claim that Iran no longer wants nuclear weapons is a bit optimistic. Given the history of the JCPOA and subsequent breakouts, a memorandum of understanding rarely translates to a full surrender of strategic leverage.

It is worth noting that this is a memorandum of understanding, not a formal treaty. That distinction allows both sides to claim victory while leaving the actual enforcement mechanisms for later negotiation.

The timeline dispute is likely a signal to the hardliners in Tehran. With protests occurring outside the foreign ministry today, Araghchi cannot afford to look like he is rushing to Trump's schedule.

That is such a good point... and think about the shipping insurance rates... the Lloyd's Market Association would need a massive confirmation before those premiums drop for the Hormuz transit!
