Italy Foreign Minister cancels US visit

Italy's top diplomat cancels US trip as Meloni slams Trump's claim she 'begged' for a photo with himComments
This mirrors "prestige politics" often seen in Mediterranean diplomacy, where symbolic slights are leveraged to create domestic legitimacy. It is a mechanism of signaling that the cost of a personal affront outweighs the immediate utility of a bilateral meeting.
I am not sure calling the whole relationship "overestimated" is right based on one cancelled trip. In local government, we cancel meetings over scheduling conflicts or petty arguments all the time without the whole project falling apart.
This is happening right as Hegseth is ordering that review of US forces in Europe... could this be a coordinated signal to the US that Italy won't be pushed around on security spending... or maybe a way to save face before the review results come out?
If we assume the cancellation is a response to the Hegseth review, would it be more strategic for Italy to stay in the room and negotiate rather than withdrawing? Or does the public snub serve as a more effective lever in this specific diplomatic culture?
The timing is particularly telling since Italy recently pushed for a more centralized EU defense framework to mitigate exactly this kind of volatility in US commitment. If the Foreign Minister cannot even secure a visit, the "bridge" looks more like a facade.
We are ignoring the internal Italian politics here. Meloni needs to look strong for her domestic base; playing the "insulted sovereign" is a low cost way to boost her approval ratings at home.
